About All Hallows

All Hallows Church is the parish church of the Parish of St Margaret and All Hallows, which is part of Headingley Deanery, in the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds, in the northern (York) province of the Church of England Church of England logo.

Central to our calling is worship, which leads to reflection on our faith, and action in the wider community. We also arrange social events which are open to all.

Publications

In addition to our weekly bulletin, we have a general leaflet about the church, and from time to time we have published a newsletter entitled Rainbow People. Follow the link below to view these publications or to download them in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format.

What’s on

Follow the link below for details of what’s on at All Hallows now and in the near future (and also details of past events):

The Parish

The parish of St Margaret and All Hallows is situated in the Hyde Park area of Leeds. This is within an urban priority area, about 2 miles from the centre of Leeds, and is part of a rapidly changing urban context. St Margaret’s Church was made redundant in 1995, and the congregation is therefore centred at All Hallows Church.

The Church building

All Hallows is a modern church, built in the early 1970s after the previous church on the site burned down.

Our ethos

All Hallows Church strives to be an open, welcoming Christian community exploring the meaning of faith today, through worship and prayer, discussion and reflection, and action in the community. Our weekly Sunday service, Sharing the Feast of Life — a service of Communion for all, draws people from throughout the Leeds area who seek a Christian community in which the gospel of love, forgiveness and compassion overrides a concern with traditional dogma and attitudes.

How we work

Aware that Churchianity can often get in the way of our practice of Christianity, we seek to organise ourselves in ways that allow for a balance between flexibility, spontaneity, radically democratic participation, and our legal responsibilities as a parish church in the Church of England. We have three main forums for debate and decision-making at All Hallows:

Who we are

We’re a very diverse group of people of all ages! We are homemakers, teachers, editors, students, cleaners, jobseekers, child-carers, counsellors, post-office workers, and many other things. We have different lifestyles: some are married, some single, some living in other relationships; some are single parents, some divorced, some widowed; some are lesbian, gay or bisexual, some heterosexual. Some of us like to go to (or even play) rugby, cricket or football; some enjoy opera and ballet; some … The list is endless!

Links with other faith traditions

We are seeking to open up inter-faith connections with local Muslims and Hindus, and through the ‘Reflections’ group some of us are in dialogue with Leeds Buddhists.

Social events

From time to time we arrange a variety of social events, including such things as a Halloween party for children, a ceilidh, a pancake party for Shrove Tuesday, a West African meal, quiz nights …
