Lesbian and Gay Liberation Sunday

This is part of our stance of openly welcoming and affirming lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Coinciding with Rainbow Weekend in Leeds, we invited queer human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell to speak at our Sunday morning service on 22 July 2001, in All Hallows’ first celebration of ‘Lesbian and Gay Liberation Sunday’.

In 2002 Lesbian and Gay Liberation Sunday was on 21 July, coinciding with Yorkshire Lesbian and Gay Pride weekend, and we celebrated it by using a special liturgy, which we have continued to use in subsequent years, with minor changes to reflect our current practice.

In 2010 Lesbian and Gay Liberation Sunday is on Sunday 1 August, coinciding with Leeds Pride. Our preacher is the Revd Colin Coward, Director of Changing Attitude. Click here for the information poster.

Sharon Ferguson Our preacher was Rev Sharon Ferguson, Interim Pastor of MCC North London and Chief Executive of the Lesbian and Gay Christian Movement. Her topic was ‘'Honouring who we are’.
6 July 2008 Anne Jenkins Our celebrant and preacher was the Revd Anne Jenkins, former vicar of All Hallows. Her topic was ‘Pride and Prejudice’.
1 July 2007 Marilyn McCord Adams Marilyn McCord Adams is Regius Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford, and a Canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. She preached on ‘Claiming our Vocations’.

Our gradual hymn was ‘All are Welcome’, a favourite at All Hallows, and Annie wrote the following Prayer for the Day:

God of inclusiveness, each one of us longs to be in your house, trusting not in our righteousness but your grace, for your house is a house of prayer for all peoples. May we see the doors flung open wide, that all may gather joyfully within your welcoming walls. Amen.

23 July 2005   Dr Elisabeth Stuart was due to preach, having led a workshop the day before on ‘Christianity is a Queer thing — Sexuality, Identity & Church’, but cancelled at short notice.
25 July 2004 Pressley Sutherland The Revd Pressley Sutherland, the Senior Pastor of MCC North London, preached on ‘Reaching for the Gospel — Taking Spiritual Initiative’.
6 July 2003 Ray Gaston Canon Trevor Dennis was due to come and preach, but sadly was prevented from doing so by illness, so Ray Gaston, our vicar, took his place at very short notice, delivering an excellent and rousing sermon.
21 July 2002   We used our special liturgy for the first time.
22 July 2001 Peter Tatchell Our first celebration of ‘Lesbian and Gay Liberation Sunday’; it attracted opposition from extreme right-wing groups.
