A part of the ‘With heart and mind’ series

‘With heart and mind’ is a series of workshops and lectures at All Hallows Church during 2001 which seeks to explore a radical contemporary reading of the Christian tradition, bringing it into dialogue with depth psychology, science, politics and other faith traditions. The aim is to feed both heart and mind, encouraging the use of both reason and intuition in our shared quest for hope and meaning.

Global Capitalism and Christian Resistance

Seattle, Quebec, May Day, Genoa … people from around the world taking to the streets to protest against the injustices of global capitalism. Christians too have been active in protesting, particularly against the injustice of world debt through organisations such as Jubilee 2000, now Drop the Debt. Meanwhile in the mainstream political arena the acceptance of the free-market economy as our only option for running the economy of the world is stifling.

What theological responses can Christians develop in this situation?
How does the gospel call us to practise resistance to the injustices of global capitalism?

Theologian and political activist Tim Gorringe is author of Capital and Kingdom: theological ethics and economic order and Alan Ecclestone: Priest and Revolutionary. His concept of theological resistance is rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ and a political reading of the theology of Karl Barth.
