A part of the 'With heart and mind' series

'With heart and mind' is a series of workshops and lectures at All Hallows Church during 2001 which seeks to explore a radical contemporary reading of the Christian tradition, bringing it into dialogue with depth psychology, science, politics and other faith traditions. The aim is to feed both heart and mind, encouraging the use of both reason and intuition in our shared quest for hope and meaning.

a new Christianity for a new world:
faith in the 21st century

My vocation as a Christian and as a bishop is to walk into this future of our faith. I do it because I am a believer who lives in a world that the Christians of the past could never have anticipated. I will never sacrifice my faith, my integrity or my citizenship in this modern world. Faith must have integrity. It must live in this age or it will not live at all. The third millennium ought to be exciting, for it will be the context in which the life or death struggle for the Christian Church is engaged.

So writes Jack Spong, the recently retired Bishop of Newark in the USA. A tireless campaigner for the rights of black people, women, and gay and lesbian people in the church throughout his ministry, Jack has also been — and remains — a powerful advocate of a bold liberal approach to matters of faith in the contemporary world. A passionate believer in the way of Jesus, Bishop Spong argues that we must make this way live for our times. Often controversial, never dull, he is a stimulating and challenging speaker. Come and hear Jack Spong at All Hallows, and discuss and respond to his ideas. Jack will speak in the morning on
The problem: why Christianity must change or die
and in the afternoon on
The cure: a new Christianity for a new world.
There will be time in both the morning and the afternoon for discussion in small groups and to respond to Jack's inputs with questions.
